Three-hundred-and-twenty years ago this week two men lay hidden in the branches of a great oak tree in Shropshire. Below them, search parties of soldiers moved to and fro, beating the bushes with their pike staffs. The two men lay still and silent hoping the searchers would not look up. Eventually one of them was to become King of England, but first he had to escape to safety. This is the story of that exciting escape.
